Hyderabad: Making a clean breast of the rampant corruption existing in the Police Department, Telangana State Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Sharma advised the people to lodge complaints with him if they came across shady elements in the constabulary.

Participating in a ‘Meet-the-Press’ programme organised by the Telangana State Union of Working Journalists (TUWJ) at the State Archeological Museum, Public Gardens, Nampally here on Wednesday, Anurag Sharma pointed out that his department had ordered CID investigation into the recent ASI Mohan Reddy’s episode.

It may be recalled that ASI Mohan Reddy was arrested following allegations that he was indulging in corrupt practices in Karimnagar district. “We are dealing with Mohan Reddy’s case impartially,” the DGP said. Stating that the department would order an inquiry into the alleged involvement of DSPs in the Mohan Reddy case, he said that both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh DGPs would sit together and sort out the problem.

The department would not show any favouritism towards any VIP and the police would act on the suggestions of VIP Securities Review Wing, he said adding, “We are very objective and impartial.”

Responding to a question, the DGP said the people who were facing problems and inaction at the bottom level had to lodge complaints with the higher-ups in the department. He also said corruption in the passport verification process had come down due to the introduction of the third party verification.

Third party verification was yielding good results, he said. He also said the Police Department would introduce ‘body wall cameras’ to know the ground level realities in between the police and the people. Stating that ‘drunk-and-drive’ checking was a successful, Sharma said the fatalities also came down due to the drive.

Reacting on Maoists’ issue, Sharma said as the ultras had no faith in the country’s Constitution and democracy, the police would get tough against them. He said they were giving counselling to the youth, who were planning to join the dreaded ISIS. “A section of the youth was getting attracted to the Facebook postings and idealistic websites and are joining ISIS,” he added.

The Telangana police was fully geared up even to meet the Paris-kind of attacks in Hyderabad and the intelligence wing was proficient to avert untoward incidents, he said.

Elaborating on the use of technology, Sharma said the Police Department procured 4,000 vehicles for visibility and mobility to solve the problems by going to the spot immediately. He said the department would install one lakh CCTV cameras across the city as part of Telangana Public Safety Act.
