Recently, a venomous snake was spotted entering a microbiology class while the lecture was on. However, it was rescued by the Snake House Organisation. The incident has sent shivers down the spine of students and faculty.

The Landscape Garden on the campus is a major dwelling for various types of these slithering creatures like King Cobra, rat snake and some other reptiles. The workers of the garden say that the snakes are spotted often.

“Daily we find snakes moving in and around the garden, they don’t harm us. But students who visit the garden sometimes kill the snakes if they spot them,” G Anuradha, a worker said

Osmania University Teacher’s Association President, Prof Battu Satyanarayana says “You will find a lot of snakes venomous and non-venomous in the landscape garden and a forest area in the campus. Before the forest area, there was a deer park and it was a natural home for small wild creatures. Though the deer park got shifted the area is still filled with them as it is their habitat.”

Friends of Snake Society member Avinash Visvanathan says, “We have been rescuing snakes since long at Osmania University. We have found different snakes like Cobra, Russell's viper and common krait which are venomous and non- venomous snakes like Red sand boa, bronze back tree snake, banded racer snake and rat snake on the campus.

As there are a few departments in remote areas of the campus, the snakes sneak into the classrooms. To avoid this happening, deep holes need to be dug and filled with sand, as snakes can’t move on sand, said Satyanarayana. While the snakes are spotted too often, the administration has not taken any steps to prevent such incidents. “Till now, the administration has not taken any action. Once in a while snake rescuers take them away if they are spotted,” Anuradha said.

How a person is identified and precautions taken if a snake bite occurs

  • Don’t tie the place tightly at the bitten place; it’s a wrong conception that poison does not enter the body.
  • When a snake bites, the bitten place starts bleeding, suffers with severe pain and the victim starts vomiting
  • The person does not die immediately once the snake bites. It takes one to two hours, so when you find a victim rush him to the doctor right away.
