DEARTH OF BASIC FACILITIES

Mahbubnagar: With majority of the schools in the district lacking toilets and water facility, Swachh Bharat seems to be only a distant dream for the schools in Mahbubnagar district.

According to the statistics, there are about 3,753 government schools in the district of which 1,123 schools were selected under Swachh Bharat mission. The State government has been releasing funds from time to time to construct toilets and install water connections in more than 1,600 government schools across the district is lagging behind in meeting the target. More than 940 schools are yet to get water connections.

In fact, the State government has allotted Rs 2.76 crores for more than 600 schools in the year 2013-14 and this fund was further enhanced to Rs 12 crores for 990 schools for the year 2014-15. However, according to the officials, the funds released earlier were not sufficient and they had to abruptly suspend the works of toilet construction.

The girl students are facing hardship due to lack of toilets. The parents of the girl students are reluctant to send their children to schools in the villages. For instance, all the 190 students of Bokkalonapally Mandal Parishad School complain of no toilets in their schools.

The construction of toilets could not be completed on the expected lines as government sanctioned only paltry funds in 2012-13. About 25 per cent of the schools were not having water facility. The toilets constructed earlier were abandoned and some locked up due to unavailability of water and bad maintenance.

After studying all the problems, the State and Central governments have increased the budget for the construction of each toilet to Rs 1.20 lakh from the year 2014-15.

Ironically, the statistics provided by the officials, claim that all works were completed but the reality is far from truth. Official records show that more than 990 schools are yet to get water connection.

In a recent development, district Collector T K Sreedevi directed the RWS officials to provide water to toilets being constructed in 666 schools. In fact, the situation is worse in remote areas and tribal hamlets.

“We are taking all the necessary steps to ensure that every school is having a toilet and directed the concerned officials to provide water connections and other facilities in schools on priority basis,” said Sridevi.
