But it is yet to address grievances of employees

Hyderabad: The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is getting rich, but the socio-economic status of its employees continues to remain pathetic for many a decade. Even as the SCCL management, which registered a profit of Rs 491 crore during the 2014-15 fiscal, gears up to celebrate its Foundation Day on December 23, symbolising the mining activity that started way back in 1889, a plethora of issues such as health care and dependent jobs continue to daunt the employees. This apart, the issues of 18,000 odd contract employees also unsolved for years.

Former Floor Leader of the CPI in the House Gunda Mallesh told The Hans India: “Despite there was an imperative need for taking up of underground mines, the government is bent upon open cast mining, which not only affecting the environment but also had its impact on employment opportunities.” He also demanded the government for the implementation of Coal India Ltd's wage accord and regularisation of the services of contractor workers.

“Before the TRS came to power, its chief K Chandrashekar Rao promised to revive the dependent employment on health grounds. He also vowed to provide jobs to the dependents of around 2,500 employees who took VRS between 1997 and 2003,” the Singareni Collieries Employees Union, affiliated to the CITU, general secretary M Narsimha Rao said, criticising the the ruling party for its failure to fulfil its promise.

Telangana Boggu Gani Karmika Sangham (TGBKS), the recognised trade union of the SCCL, general secretary Miryala Raji Reddy said since the SCCL did not have a super-speciality hospital, the miners, especially working in the UG mines, have been facing immense problems. Getting a referral to the corporate hospitals in Hyderabad is a herculean task for the miners, he said, demanding better medical facilities in coal belt areas.
