Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has spent about Rs 24,300 for distributing 243 walking sticks to the senior citizens in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits under Aasara scheme, according to an RTI report.

There are about 77, 845 beneficiaries in the GHMC limits (24,385 in Rangareddy district and 53,460 in Hyderabad district).

According to the report obtained by Lok Satta city unit general secretary B Sambi Reddy, the Aasara scheme was started in 2007 during the regime of former Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

The funds allocated for the scheme were Rs 5.37 lakh in 2007-08, Rs 24.79 lakh in 2008-09, Rs 15.35 lakh in 2009-10, Rs 7.7 lakh in 2010-11, Rs 76,000 in 2011-12, Rs 16 lakh in 2012-13, Rs 11.25 lakh in 2013-14, Rs 11.04 lakh in 2014-15 and Rs 12.23 lakh for the financial year 2015-16. The Telangana State government has distributed about 153 walking sticks in 2014-15 and 90 walking Sticks in 2015-16, for which it had, spend about Rs 24,000.

Commenting on this, Sambi Reddy said, "These statistics would talk louder than all the hoardings put by the government to exhibit their achievements. This shows that the government is more interested in getting publicity for the scheme, rather than the welfare of the citizens.”

He also pointed out that government has appointed only a person as in-charge to the Aasara Scheme. He wondered how it could be practically possible for one employee to reach out to all the beneficiaries.
