Warangal: Union Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday announced allocation of Rs 41,000 crore for Telangana to develop national highways. The Union Minister, who laid foundation stone for the expansion of 163rd National Highway at Madikonda in Warangal district and dedicated the Eturunagaram bridge across the river Godavari to the nation along with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, said a total of 1670-km new national highways would be built in Telangana at a cost of Rs 16,500 crore.

He said the Telangana government has been advised to prepare DPR for these works. The Union government sanctioned Rs 900 crore for development of roads under annual plan for 2015-16 in Telangana. Gadkari said the work for improvement of 104km road between Nakrekal to Thanamcherla (71 km) and Jamandlapalli to Mangalwaripet (33 km) of NH-365 would be taken up in the next six months, he said.

He said, “Unless we have better roads, we cannot expect rapid growth and simultaneous development”. The Centre has given its nod to the request made by the TS government for the roads. He said the centre has also decided to spend Rs 16,500 crore for express highways connecting Hyderabad and Bengaluru and also Hyderabad and Vijayawada, he said.

Referring to Bhadrachalam and Kautala road, the union minister said it will be developed into a national highway. Assuring to help Telangana develop in all sectors, Gadkari asked the State government to send a report to develop Godavari Water Transport system. Thanking the Centre, KCR said Telangana people will remember the name of Nithin Gadkari for having granted 1800-km roads that need Rs 41,000 crore.

Stating that Warangal is a potentially big city after Hyderabad, he said the Centre had sanctioned a Sainik School for Warangal. He asked the Union minister to build more railway bridges in Telangana and restart Cement Corporation of India unit in the city where the State proposes to set up a textile park. Stressing on the importance of developing inland waterways Gadkari said India was lagging behind in terms of using waterways. Currently the nation was using only 3.5 percent of available waterways for transportation.

Hence, he said it was decided to develop 111 new inland waterways across India including the rivers in Telangana state. He asked the Chief Minister to promote cultivation of bio-fuels in Telangana in order to address increasing pollution. The centre has also planned to build ROBs at 300 places to prevent accidents on highways, of which 12 would be in Telangana he added. Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya, Deputy Chief Minister K Srihari, R&B minister Thummala Nageshwar Rao and others were present.
