FARMER SUICIDES IN TS, AP

Hyderabad: Hyderabad High Court on Monday adjourned the case related to farmers’ suicides in Telugu States for six weeks and directed the States to spell their decision on implementing the suggestions given by the farmers’ representatives.

The High Court heard the case of farmers’ suicides on Monday. The governments of both States have revealed that they conducted a meeting with the representatives of the farmers’ community. The farmers suggested that both the Telugu States set up a special State-Level Agriculture Commission for solving problems of farmers.

Responding to it, the Court said the suggestion was good one. The counsels of the States submitted to the Court that they needed some more time to implement the farmers’ suggestions.

At one point of time, the High Court pulled up Andhra Pradesh government for not explaining about the policies being implemented to help farmers. It may be noted that various reasons have been offered to explain why farmers commit suicide in both Telugu speaking States, including: floods, drought, debt, use of genetically modified seed, public health and government economic policies.

There is no consensus on what the main causes might be but studies show suicide victims are motivated by more than one cause, on average three or more causes for committing suicide.
