Hyderabad: The Telangana State occupies 10th position in the milch animal (cattle and buffaloes) count in the country and ranks as one of the lowest per capita milk production States in the country.

  • Ranks as one of the lowest per capita milk producing States in the country
  • Traditional methods in milk production, lack of maintenance of hygiene in cattle shelters and non-availability of nutritious fodder cited as main reasons for declining milk production

According to official sources, the State government has not focused its attention on this aspect yet and the farmers were not introduced to modern technology in rearing milch cattle. As a result, the per capita milk production in the State is only 3 liters as against the national average of 6 liters.

Lack of constructive dairy policy as adopted by many States including highest milk producing States like Gujarat, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh and the absence of scientific management of milch cattle by the owners in the villages have been given main reasons for low milk production.

The officials of the State Animal Husbandry department said the individual farmers were still practicing traditional methods in rearing milch animals. About 75 per cent of the total 42 lakh buffaloes and 50 lakh cows were owned by individuals and the remaining were reared by the private dairy companies for milching.

Traditional methods in milk production, lack of maintenance of hygiene in cattle shelters and non-availability of nutritious fodder were some of the main reasons for declining milk production per cattle, the sources said.

There was also no dairy policy for the promotion of milk industry in a scientific way. Barring the procurement of milk from the farmers, the government does not have any role or responsibility in increasing the milk production.

At present, the State stands at 13th position in the country in milk production. The State produces 20 lakh litres of milk a day. Out of which, 10 lakh litres was being produced by individual farmers and five lakh litres each by private dairies and the cooperative societies.

“The increasing number of dairy companies from other States foraying in to the state to meet the milk demand in recent times, makes it evident that Telangana is lagging behind others in milk production, as well as value additional to the dairy products like cheese, butter, ghee and curd for which there is a growing demand,” State Principal Secretary to Animal Husbandry Suresh Chanda said.

The official said the government was studying dairy policies of other States to address several issues including increasing per capita milk production and adopt suitable measures from next financial year.
