Hyderabad: 22-year-old Maaz Hasan Farooq, who was arrested by the Hyderabad police for attempting to leave for Syria and join Islamic State fighters, reportedly confessed that he wanted to take part in establishing Dar-ul-Islam under the leadership of Caliphate Abu Bakar Al Baghdadi, but his parents treated him like a prisoner.

The engineering student, hailing from Humayunnagar, along with his cousins Abdullah Basith (21) and Syed Omer Farooq Hussaini (22) of Chandrayangutta were arrested by the Hyderabad police from Nagpur International Airport on December 26, when they attempted to travel to Syria via Kashmir.

During the police custody, Maaz reportedly confessed to have associated with Student Islamic Organization (SIO), a frontal organisation of Jamat-e-Islami. Having similar ideology, Maaz and Basith discussed about leaving to Syria again and join the IS forces to destabilise the unity among nations, the sources said.

“I used to watch videos on You Tube regarding the treatment of Islamic State and listen to the speeches of late Anwar al-Awlaki of Yemen, an alleged recruiter of IS. After detention by the police, my parents restricted me at home and treated me as a prisoner for having Jihadist ideology, but my mindset did not change,” sources quoted Maaz’s confession.

“I watched videos of happenings in Palestine, Gaza strip, Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq and the excesses committed by the western countries. It disturbed me a lot and caused pain and mental agony, which led me to develop contacts with ISIS sympathisers through social media in order to join the Islamic State forces,” Maaz told the police.

Meanwhile, Basith and Maaz told the investigators that though police counselled them in the presence of their parents, their intention to leave to Syria did not stop. Earlier, in September 2014, Maaz and Basith, along with Noman and Abrar, were detained by the police from a hotel in Kolkata when they attempted to leave to Syria via Bangladesh, using fake Bangladesh passports.

They were all set free after counseling in the presence of their parents. Omer Farooq, who had joined his cousins Maaz and Basith in their journey to Syria, got inspired to join IS listening to the conversations of Maaz and Basith.

Maaz and Basith told the police that they did not want to take Omer with them, but he convinced them by saying that they would have to answer to the God for stopping him.“He influenced us by saying ‘Qayamath mein jawab dena hoga,’ and we were yielded to his pressure and accepted his proposal to come along with us,” said Maaz and Basith.

However, the police sources said they were in the process of gathering crucial evidences. Some bikes used by the trio and the air tickets and some cash were seized. Thorough verification of their email conversations was also being done, the police added.
