Wardhannapet (Warangal): The festivities have on Thursday begun at Inavolu village in Wardhannapet mandal in the district marking ‘Mallikarjuna Swamy Jatara’.

The jatara, one of biggest religious events in Telangana attracts devotees in large numbers from across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka states. The celebration of the jatara (Brahmotsavams) continues for three months till Ugadi on April 8.

Special events would take place from January 13 to 15 marking Sankranthi celebration. The temple was believed to have been built by Kakatiya minister Ayyanna Devudu. The devotees use ‘Bandari’ (turmeric) as the main offering to the deity. The temple is mainly frequented by Yadava, Golla, Kuruma and Balija communities.

The celestial marriage of presiding deities Mallikarjuna Swamy, incarnation of Lord Shiv and his consorts Golla Kethamma and Balija Medalamma, which takes places on March 7 marking Mahasivatri, would be highlight of the jatara.

On Thursday, about 20, 000 devotees have visited the temple and it was expected that about five lakh devotees would attend the jatara during three months. The TSRTC has planned to operate 120 special buses from Hanamkonda, informed the Depot Manager Y Abraham.

MPs A Seetaram Naik and P Dayakar, MLA A Ramesh, MLC M Srinivas Reddy, TRS senior leader Nannapuneni Narender and others offered prayers at the temple on the day.

Meanwhile, the devotees have faced hardships due to lack of proper drinking water facilities. Those camped at the temple were forced to use the water from taps arranged for bathing to cook their food.
