Dr Vipin Srivastava who is the Interim Vice-Chancellor of Hyderabad Central University has taken a leave with effect from Friday afternoon. The duties of the vice-chancellor of the university will be performed by next senior most professor Dr M Periasamy until further orders are issued in terms of the Statute 1A (7) of the University.

Prof Vipin Srivastava took up the charge as the acting Vice-Chancellor on January 24 after Prof P Appa Rao went on leave. The HCU campus is embroiled with protests following the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula with the students demanding the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao and also opposed the appointment of Prof Srivastava as the in charge VC stating that he was the chairman of the committee that recommended suspension of five Dalit students.
