Mahbubnagar: Commemorating the 277th birth anniversary of Satguru Sevalal Maharaj, the tribal guru of ‘Gor Banjaras’ on Saturday, more than 3,000 tribals from across the district thronged at Zilla Parisahad grounds in Mahbubnagar and witnessed the ‘Maha Bhog’ programme on the occasion.

TRS MP Jitendar Reddy, Mahbubnagar MLA Srinivas Goud and District Collector Dr T K Sridevi took part in the Maha Bhog programme. The event was marked by cultural dance programme, tribal songs and drama. Lambadi women dressed up in their traditional attire welcomed the visiting leaders, officials and other dignitaries in traditional way at the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Jitendar Reddy reiterated that all the tribal thandas with a population of over 500 would be converted into gram panchayats. Srinivas Goud praised the unity of the tribals. He said in the united Andhra Pradesh the tribal community was neglected. He thanked Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for granting Rs 10 lakhs for the celebration of 277th birth anniversary of the tribal guru.

“No government in the united Andhra Pradesh had recognised the needs Gor Banjaras,” he said. Referring to the recent grants of Rs. 11 crores for the construction of hostels for tribal working women, men, girls and boys, and a tribal bhavan in the district, the MLA said the district collector had been asked to identify open places for the same and start the construction of the hostels for the welfare of tribals.

The District Collector appreciated the tribals for shunning illicit liquor trade and opting for respectable self employment. “I am proud to say that Mahbubnagar is liquor free and this has happened only because of tribals in the rural areas giving up manufacturing of illicit liquor and opting for respectable living. More than 600 rural people have been identified and are being supported by the government to take up self employment schemes for their livelihood.

We have asked the ST Corporation, ITDA officials and the bankers to give priority to those who stopped illicit liquor production and wanting to lead respectable life,” said the Collector. The Collector also reiterated that education was the only thing that would bring change among the tribals. She appreciated the fact that more number of people were getting selected in top posts in the government sector.

However she suggested that every employee and leader from the Banjara community also work towards the betterment of their community by voluntarily supporting the poor tribals to get educated. “Education will help develop the community both culturally and economically and every tribal has the responsibility to make his children educated and nurture them to aim bigger goals in life,” said the Collector.

Organising president Laxman and other tribal leaders urged the government to allot 5 acres of land in the district for the cultural building in the name of ‘Satguru Sevalal’, where the tribals would have their own temple for Tulja Bhavani in the district.
