Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad has asked the Telangana State government to submit its action plan to cleanse and beautify the Musi river in Hyderabad to the court by March 21.

A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice P Naveen Rao gave this direction while hearing a Public Interest Litigation petition filed by M Padmanabha Reddy of Forum for Good Governance.

The petitioner sought direction from the court to the government to speed up and complete the operation cleansing and beautification of the river. Counsel for the petitioner B Rachana Reddy brought to the notice of the court that despite spending more than Rs 400 crore for construction of sewerage treatment plants, there had been no improvement in reduction of pollution levels in Musi.

She pointed out that in 2009 after the failure of the first phase of the project, the Central government had suggested preparation of a joint action plan by Hyderabad Metro Water Works and Sewerage Board, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority.

The suggestion had not been acted upon and these agencies had formulated separate plans. She recalled that the Centre had come forward to bear 70 per cent of cost for the project. She prayed the court to direct the government to constitute a special purpose vehicle for the cleaning and beautification of Musi river.

The bench asked the State government counsel to ascertain the views of the government and place the action plan on record. It asked the petitioner to implead Union of India as party to the petition.
