Warangal: The State government has failed to identify the drought-affected mandals in scientific manner and to take up relief measures, alleged Telangana Rythu Sangham state general secretary B Chandra Reddy. He demanded the government to declare all mandals in the State as drought-affected and to launch immediate measures to address the issue.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, he said there has been a shortage of water and cattle feed in villages. It was forcing the villagers to migrate to urban areas in search of livelihood and selling away the cattle. Nearly 50 percent works of many irrigation projects were completed but the government was neglecting them while going for new projects on the pretext of redesigning, just to get commissions, he alleged.

Giving up Kanthanapally project in Warangal was sad though it helps to make effective use of river Godavari waters, he stated. Tenant Farmers Association state president P Ramesh and general secretary T Sagar said there were about 10 lakh tenant farmers in the State but the government has not issued identity cards to them. Thus the tenant farmers were not able to avail benefits meant for them.

Of the 1,800 farmers who committed suicide, 1,000 were tenant farmers. The government should issue ID cards to tenant farmers by May 15 and provide crop loans, subsidy seeds, fertilizer and crop insurance. In support of their demands, the associations would take up a series of agitations from April 8, they informed. The Rythu Sangham leaders G Rajanna, V Veeranna, P Malla Reddy and others were present.
