Traffic violations on the rise in city
In spite of the traffic police trying several measures to bring some semblance of orderliness as far as traffic sense is concerned, the average Hyderabadi has not learnt from past mistakes. Among the various violations on roads, wrong parking, no entry, parking on service roads, signal jumping, wrong side driving, driving without helmet, triple riding, overspeeding, improper number plate and parking at commercial centres top the list of the
violations.
In 2014, there were 32,296 pending challans for wrong parking in carriage way and the number of challans went up to 1,76, 262 in 2015 and in 2016 the pending challans already touched 57,010. Likewise, pending challans in the parking on service roads category went up from 202,106 in 2014 to 328,233 in 2015.
Citizens complain that with parking spaces shrinking due to developmental activities including the Hyderabad Metro Rail work they have no option but to park vehicles in public places. Revathy Muthuswamy, a resident of Banjara Hills says, “There have been several instances when there was no space left to park vehicles in busy commercial centres.”
“What option does an individual have?” she asks. DCP (Traffic) A V Ranganath said there cannot be overall traffic sense unless people cooperated with the police. He further added, “There are 45 lakh vehicles in Hyderabad and 25 lakh licences. It should be the other way round. We need to correct this anomaly.”
In March, the traffic police launched a special drive and charge-sheeted 650 people, besides booking 10,000 persons. As many as 50 persons were imprisoned. Ranganath said in the coming days persons who were caught thrice without a driving license would be prosecuted. As much as Rs 80 crore were to be colleged through pending challans.
One of the most critical violations is riding and driving vehicles without a proper number plate. The number has been increasing much to the disappointment of the traffic police. From 16,422 pending challans in 2014 it rose to 34,797 in 2015 and in this category there are over a lakh pending challans since 2009.
