Hyderabad: The salaries of MLAs, MLCs would go up nearly three-folds and the perks drawn by the Chief Minister and Cabinet rank members would be doubled from 2016-17 financial year. Telangana State government on Monday introduced a bill to amend “The Telangana payment of salaries and pension and removal of disqualification Act 1953” in the Assembly.

  • Salaries for Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Ministers, Chief Whip, Whip and the Opposition Leader would be enhanced to `4.60 lakh from the present `2.53 lakh
  • Salaries of MLAs will go up from `95,000 to `2.60 lakh
  • Additional burden on exchequer is estimated to be `42.67 crore

Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao tabled the bill in the House. Salaries of the legislators would be hiked from Rs 95,000 to nearly Rs 2.60 lakh. The basic salary would be increased to Rs 20,000 from Rs 12,000 and the allowances would be raised to Rs 2.30 lakh from Rs 83,000.

The salaries of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, Ministers, Chief Whip, Whip and the Opposition Leader would be enhanced to Rs 4.60 lakh from the present Rs 2.53 lakh. It is estimated that State would have to bear Rs 42.67 crore additional financial burden because of the increase in the salaries of people’s representatives.

The bill says pension for ex-legislators would be increased to Rs 30,000 per month. In the meeting held on February 21, the committee on Amenities of Telangana State Legislature unanimously decided to hike the salaries and other allowances to the present members and also pension and other facilities being provided to ex-members and recommended the same to government.
