The meeting was presided over by ZP Chairperson G Padma and was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari and Zilla Parishad Territorial Committee (ZPTC) members of ruling and opposition parties.

Discussions were held on education, health, drinking water scarcity, employment guarantee scheme works, panchayat raj, and roads and buildings. Both the ruling and opposition party members have actively taken part in the discussions. The discussions would continue on Saturday.

At the beginning of the meeting, education was taken up for discussion and the education department officials briefed the members about educational scenario in the district. The Deputy CM asked the officials to present educational profile of every mandal to ZPTC members.

Srihari told officials to make efforts to improve literacy rate to 80 per cent while expressing over concern over poor literacy rate in the district which stands at 65 per cent lower than the national average of 76 per cent and state average of 66 per cent. Efforts were being made to generate Rs 150 crore from government and NGOs to improve infrastructure in government schools in the district and to increase enrolment.

It was planned to open four English medium schools in each mandal from the ensuing academic year, he added. During discussions on drinking water issue, the Deputy CM said that an action was prepared with Rs 66 crore to address the issue and from different sources Rs 23 crores were released. He asked the legislators to contribute Rs 50 lakh each from their development funds for the cause.

Under different heads, works worth Rs 2,000 crore were taken up towards laying new roads and repair of roads, Srihari informed. He asked the R&B officials to submit works schedule related to 300 works to the district collector by April 16. MP P Dayakar, MLAs Ch Dharma Reddy, B Shankar Naik, D Madhava Reddy, M Yadagiri Reddy, District Collector Vakati Karuna, ZP CEO Anil Kumar Reddy and others were present.
