Hyderabad: Congress and TDP, which have been arch rivals, are likely to join hands in the Palair byelection. It appears that barring the CPI(M) all other parties have agreed to support Congress if they field a family member of Ramreddy Venkat Reddy. This would mean that Palair would witness a triangular contest.

Telangana Congress Committee president N Uttam Kumar Reddy approached TTDP leader L Ramana to seek support of TDP. Ramana informed Uttam Kumar that he would consult the party national president N Chandrababu Naidu and would let him know his decision.

Party insiders said that though the Khammam party workers were in favour of Nama Nageswara Rao to contest against his arch rival Tummala Nageswara Rao, the party is having second thoughts on the issue. Nama himself is said to be reluctant to contest.

The general practice is not to put up a candidate if a sitting MLA dies to allow a family member to win the bypoll without a contest. Meanwhile, Congress has also sought the support of YSR Congress party. TPCC working presdient Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Friday called on YSRCP president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy at his Lotus Pond office.

He urged Jagan not to field YSRCP candidate in Palair byelections and support the Congress candidate. According to sources, Jagan was non-committal on the issue although he assured to consider the request. Bhatti told him that the Congress party was planning to field one of the family members of deceased MLA Ramreddy Venkat Reddy, whose sudden demise necessitated the bypoll.

Speaking to media persons at Gandhi Bhavan, Bhatti slammed Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for breaking the tradition of ensuring unanimous election of family members in case of untimely demise of sitting MLAs. He said it was solely due to arrogance and greed for power that the KCR has broken all traditions. He urged all opposition parties to support the Congress party in byelections which are scheduled to be held next month.
