Rampachodavaram (East Godavari): The scenic ghat roads of the agency areas adjoining the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States are turning into dangerous spots lately what with the number of accidents increasing by the day and the officials concerned turning a blind eye to their causes.

The Roads and Buildings department has failed to take any measures to prevent road accidents on the 25-km-long Bhadrachalam-Maredumilli ghat road in spite of several people losing their lives in road accidents and many more being injured in the recent past.

On Monday last, one person died and nine others were injured criticially when a bus coming from Mancherial went off the road and fell into the valley.

Earlier, eight pilgrims lost their lives when the driver of the van in which they were travelling, lost control and the van fell into the valley at the Tiger camp. In yet another incident, five persons died when a coconut-laden lorry fell into the valley.

Not less than 20 lorries and vans had fallen into the valley killing at least 15 persons in various incidents in the last few days. The number of injured is even higher.

Of the Bhadrachalam-Maredumilli road, 25 km is ghat road, which was widened at Chintur towards Maredumilli. The ghat road has no protective walls built to prevent vehicles from falling into the valley. The ghat road was widened up to a distance of five km only from the residential school at Maredumilli.

The R&B department has not sent even a single proposal for the construction of protective walls on the ghat road so far. During the monsoon season, slipping of earth is common on the ghat roads and vehicles skid leading to accidents.
