​Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is planning to make rainwater harvesting pits compulsory for all the houses on 100 square metres.

GHMC Commissioner Dr B Janardhan Reddy on Saturday held a review meeting with senior officials to discuss the proposal. He said a proposal was being sent to the State government to constitute a committee to study the proposal.

He said that the State government has the powers to issue orders making rainwater harvesting pits compulsory in all the houses.

The Commissioner said that Rs 3.17 crore was spent from 2008-2012 for the construction of 2,135 rainwater harvesting pits. Similarly, Rs 7.6 crore was spent from 2012-2014 for constructing 3,622 pits.

Janardhan Reddy said that the corporation would take up construction of 100 rainwater harvesting pits in each zone and two-year-old pits would be repaired.
