Nalgonda: Works on Buddhavanam project in Nagarjunasagar are being carried out at snail’s pace thanks to the apathy on the part of the government and the officials concerned. The State government in the united Andhra Pradesh designed the project in 275 acres in 2005 at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crore to attract Buddhists from all corners of the world.

The works on the project began in 2005. Till now only Rs 38 crore worth of works were completed. As per the history, it was a place where Acharya Nagarjuna established a university and was the main centre for the propagation of Buddhism in other countries. Considering all historical evidence, the Centre had decided to construct the gigantic historical project in South India at Nagarjunasagar in the district.

As per the design, the Buddha Vanam project was divided into eight sections. Out of eight only five sections of works are now underway and remaining three sections work have not yet begun. One of the important sections is a construction of great monument which includes museum, auditorium and meditation centre.

The dome of the monument will have different types of Buddha sculptures. Half of the work on the great monument has been completed. There are a 60 feet roads around the monument. Buddha History Park too has been completed partially. Works on Spiritual Park and Monuments Park have been completed, but Monument Park with garden is yet to be built.
