Wanaparthy (Mahabubnagar): He is a drawing teacher with a passion to promote art. Bas Lingaiah continues taking drawing classes even after his retirement as a teacher of a government school recently. He is running a free summer camp for students in a private school in the town.

Impressed by the commitment of Lingaiah, many parents sent their children to his summer camp to enable them to spend their vacation in a purposeful manner. About 300 children are attending the camp.

All his drawings convey a social message as he wants to motivate students to strive for nation building through art. Students are also trained in making idols using eco-friendly materials and natural colours. He is also an expert puppeteer. He uses puppetry as a teaching tool to create an interest among students in the rich history and culture of Telangana.

Lingaiah who started his career as a drawing teacher in a government school in Warangal, attained superannuation while working at Gopalpet in Mahabubnagar. His passion for teaching does not decline even after his retirement. He got as many as 40 awards in drawing during his teaching career. The highest award is the one that he received from the then Vice-President of India Shankar Dayal Sharma in New Delhi in 1988.

Lauding the initiative of Lingaiah in organising the free summer camp, Ramesh, a parent, said: ``Government teachers with commitment are rare nowadays as most of them look for slightest opportunity to abstain from duties. Majority of them are more interested in running private tuition at home rather than teaching in school. Lingaiah is a role model for government teachers.’’

Speaking to The Hans India, Lingaiah said: ``The number of drawing teachers in government schools is on the decline. Drawing as a subject is not getting due attention now. It is evident with about 200 drawing teacher posts in government schools lying vacant in Mahabubnagar district alone. I want to disseminate art through the conduct of free summer camp. I get immense satisfaction in teaching what I know to students.’’
