Empowerment of women thro’ vocational training

Mahabubnagar: She is a resource person who is committed to empowerment of women. Aliya Sultana of Shadnagar has given training to about 10,000 women in various vocational and skill development programmes through Femina, a women’s service organisation, established by her within a span of six years to enable them to achieve economic independence.

Her house at Gandhi Nagar Colony in Shadnagar reflects Aliya Sultana's craftsmanship as it is a virtual treasure trove of a variety of handicrafts. She underwent training in a number of vocational and skill development programmes in Hyderabad after her graduation. After her marriage, she started imparting training to women in various vocational skills, which include tailoring, plastic bag making, painting, flower decoration, beautician course and other trades.

Many housewives of Shadnagar who underwent training under Sultana, are self-employed now. They also started imparting vocational skills to fellow women. Sultana has so far got three awards in recognition of her endeavour for women’s empowerment. Speaking to The Hans India, a Sultana who is a resource person at Jan Shikshan Sansthan in Mahabubnagar, said ``Vocational training is immensely useful to housewives hailing from middle class and lower income groups to augment their family income.

It also enables women belonging to minorities to achieve economic independence. I give training to women in the vocational skills of their choice. Beautician course is the most sought after nowadays. I got the full support of my husband and other family members in the endeavor.’’ Many young girls are also getting training from her in vocational skills during their summer vacation. Bhavani, a first year BZC student who is undergoing training in beautician course, said: ``I hope it will come in handy for me to achieve career growth in future.’’
