Anantapur: Andhra Pradesh Press Academy Chairman V Vasudeva Deekshithulu and Minister for Information and Public Relations Palle Raghunatha Reddy had interaction with the electronic and print media representatives at the DWMA Meeting Hall here on
Wednesday.

Addressing members of various journalists associations, Palle Raghunatha Reddy made an impassionate plea to journalists to give adequate coverage for the good governance that is happening under the stewardship of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

In the past, landmark achievements of the TDP government including linking of rivers, speedy recovery of Visakhapatnam from Hudhud cyclone and many such things did not attract adequate media attention.

He impressed upon the journalists on the need to inculcate positivity in the comprehension of issues and on balanced reporting. The notion that a negative twist to news coverage only will be appreciated by the people should be given a re-thinking. The Minister gave several examples of news items he had come across on how negative headlines were given to news items which had 99 per cent positive features and how it negated the good content of the news item.

This kind of sensationalism de-motivates those who do good to the society, he opined.

The TDP government, he said, has initiated several welfare measures to journalists irrespective of their media managements’ political affiliations. In the current year, 15,000 accreditations were given to reporters throughout the State. The government through a revised GO had even included desk journalists for accreditation status.

It also has given health cards to family members of journalists and Rs 10 lakh insurance coverage for the journalists so that in the event of their sudden demise, their family members would be taken care of by the insurance coverage.

The Minister positively responded to appeals made by journalist associations for formulating a pension scheme for retired journalists who cross 60 years of age. Journalists suggested that each journalist can be given Rs 2,000 or Rs 3,000 monthly pension.

Palle promised to constitute a committee to study the issues of pension, houses to journalists and also to study benefits being accorded to journalists in other States and make recommendations
accordingly.

He said that protection to journalists is also top on the government agenda. He said that it was the TDP government which gave due representation to all journalist associations in the government committees including
accreditation committees etc.
