Hyderabad: In the backdrop of motorists being reluctant to wear headgear despite imposing higher penalties, the Hyderabad Traffic Police are planning to implement the “No Helmet – No Petrol” rule soon.

At a high-level meeting held by the State Road Transport Department and police recently in the city, officials have decided to implement the rule as a pilot scheme to gauge public reaction and then implement it across the State.

“The rule is being implemented in Adilabad from June 2. Kerala and Madhya Pradesh are already implementing the rule on the recommendations of the Committee constituted by the Supreme Court on Road Safety,” said a police official.

“If the new rule helps in enforcing the helmet rule, public announcement would be made through various media,” he said. The decision on this would be taken by the end of June and the rule may be implemented by mid-July.

Petrol filling stations would be directed not sell petrol to the motorists without helmet, the police officer added.
