Nizamabad: District Collector Yogitha Rana on Saturday directed the Agriculture and Revenue officials to ensure that all small and marginal farmers in Nizamabad district secure crop loans by July 15 during the Kharif season.

Speaking at a review meeting at Pragati Bhavan, the Collector said crop loans for 3.75 lakh farmers in the district would be renewed. Around 91,000 farmers would be given fresh crop loans. The officials should prepare the lists of eligible farmers village-wise for renewal and sanction of fresh crop loans by July 5.

The Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana would cover eight crops in the district. They include paddy, maize, green gram, black gram, red gram, jowar, soybean and turmeric. Small and marginal farmers can get their names enrolled in the Prime Minister's Crop Insurance Scheme before July 31 by paying a nominal premium. The insurance scheme would protect them from crop failure due to the vagaries of nature.

The Collector directed the officials to educate the farmers on the benefits of the crop insurance scheme by organising awareness campaign at the mandal level on June 27 and 28. Loan eligibility cards would be issued to all the tenant farmers to protect them from falling into the clutches of village moneylenders, she said.

Underlining the need to stabilise ayacut under various irrigation sources in Kharif, the Collector asked Tahsildars to take up repair works of tanks in villages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). The storage capacity of 600 tanks which were restored under Mission Kakatiya would be increased.

As a measure to promote women’s empowerment, four lakh members of self-help groups would be brought under the purview of Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana in the district, the Collector said.

Joint Collector A Ravinder Reddy, DRO Padmakar, DRDA Project Director Chandramohan Reddy, Lead District Manager Ramakrishna Rao, Irrigation Superintending Engineer Gangadhar, Joint Director of Agriculture Narasimha, RDOs Yadireddy, Nagesh, Syamprasad Lal and other officials attended the review meeting.
