Hyderabad: Huge trenches that have been dug up by private agencies on the 100-m stretch of Minister Road in Secunderabad, an important link road, is not only posing grave threat to pedestrians and motorists, but also to patients and caretakers near Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) hospital.

Though a private agency, which has dug up the road, has installed barricades to prevent motorists from falling into the 5ft deep trenches, several commercial establishment owners complained that the barricades were weak and the road had become dangerously slippery due to rains.

Every day, traffic on Minister Road, which connects Begumpet and Tank Bund road, crawls because of the congestion due to trenching of one of the lanes for the past two months.

The severity of the problem is so high that ambulances cannot reach KIMS Hospital which is hardly 50 metre away from Rasoolpura Crossroads.

The private agency laid some wooden planks on the trench for pedestrians to cross the road but they have also become fragile due to wear and tear.

Sharing her ordeal, a 60-year-old patient J Sridevi said, “I found it very difficult to cross the road due to careless digging in front of the hospital. It is scary to even cross the road and reach the hospital.

I wish officials showed more concern and compassion while carrying out works in the area. Public safety seems to have taken a backseat due to the apathy of municipal officials. Even gaps between barricades along the trench are posing a grave threat to motorists and pedestrians alike.”

A marketing executive of an MNC, M Pavan Kumar, said, “The wide two-lane road is now so narrow that bikers dread to tread along the stretch when a bigger vehicle passes through the road.

The situation is so severe that several bikers have skidded on this road and had a near fatal fall in their over enthusiasm to get out of traffic congestion.”

When queried about the precarious situation there, a senior GHMC Engineering official told The Hans India that the corporation had instructed the private agency to immediately stop the ongoing cable works following a steep rise in the number of.

complaints about the unsafe barricading around trenches in the area. He said the corporation would initiate action if they did not stop work in the next couple of days.
