Hyderabad: Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Friday urged the Telangana leaders to hit the roads and become the voice of the downtrodden in the State.

Addressing the valedictory function of a day-long training programme of Congress party's municipal chairpersons, corporators and councillors at Prakasam Hall on the premises of Gandhi Bhavan, Digvijay asked them take up public issues and stand by the oppressed sections in the State.

He asked the party workers to focus on issues pertaining to drinking water, social sector schemes, old age pensions, subsidies, fee reimbursement, etc. "Take the Congress party out of Gandhi Bhavan.

You should go to the masses by taking up a door-to-door campaign," he said. He also advised Congress leaders to make full use of social media. He said Narendra Modi became Prime Minister primarily due to social media campaigns.

“All TPCC leaders must compile information on people affected by different projects being executed by the State government and file a PIL. The TRS government is openly violating The Land Acquisition Act and is trying to replace it with GO 123.

As per the law, compensation alone for land is not adequate. The government is also required to provide a job to one member in each of the affected families. Else, it should pay monthly compensation of Rs 5,000 to Rs 7,000 for a period of 20 years. It also needs to pay compensation to outsees," he said.

Digvijay Singh accused Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao of escalating the cost of various projects to make his family richer. He said that kickbacks being received from contractors were being used to lure legislators of Opposition parties.

He asked the TPCC to hire the services of retired engineers and experts to do an analysis of the cost of different projects being executed by the state government. "We need to expose the corrupt practices of the TRS government.

You cannot pressurise the government and its contractors unless you expose their shady deals," he said. "TDP and YSRCP are finished in Telangana and BJP lacks potential. Therefore, Congress is the only alternative to TRS in the State," he claimed.

Speaking about defections, Digvijay Singh reiterated that the leaders with vested interests or those seeking contracts or tenders were joining the ruling TRS. He advised TPCC President N Uttam Kumar Reddy not to worry about defections and keep his focus on loyal Congress workers.
