Hyderabad: Despite vehement opposition from green activists, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC|) has decided to go ahead with the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) at KBR National Park.

Officials said that GHMC would carry out environmental and social impact assessments within a week and were hopeful of getting the 'stay order' issued by National Green Tribunal (NGT), vacated in the next hearing scheduled for July 21.

According to a recent survey conducted by GHMC, about 2.5 lakh vehicles use the road between KBR Park junction and Jubilee Hills check post every day and produce 107.92 tons of carbon dioxide, 0.05 tons of methane air and 0.02 ton metric acid.

The report said that if the situation were allowed to continue, the alarming increase in vehicles would result in emissions of 456.19 tons of carbon dioxide by 2035, which would make it impossible for people to live in the city.

Citing the survey report, the civic body is preparing plans to construct six multi-level flyovers at the KBR Park junction. Officials said they plan to explain the findings of the report to the National Green Tribunal and get the 'stay order' vacated.

A senior GHMC official told The Hans India that even though SRDP at KBR Park was caught in a legal wrangle, the civic body is confident of things working out in its favour, in the larger interest of the general public.

He said the civic body has started the land acquisition process and already acquired about 50 properties. He said that owners of four properties located between KBR Park Junction and Jubilee Hills Junction were not willing to part with their land and were demanding huge amounts.

The official said that a property owner near NTR Trust Bhavan demanded Rs 800 crore for his small chunk of land. The civic body would be spending about Rs 1,000 crore for acquiring 58 properties. The official said the civic body would either negotiate with the property-owners or invoke the Land Acquisition Act.

Speaking on GHMC’s proposal to enforce ‘one-way traffic’ on the road near KBR junction, the official clarified that there was no such proposal as of now, but they will definitely think about it at the time of construction. The GHMC official also clarified that the corporation would not axe any trees in KBR Park but only around the periphery.

He said that some NGOs with vested interests have been spreading rumours that the corporation would axe about 3,000 trees in the park.

Stating that GHMC would remove 1,394 trees as part of SRDP, the official said that there were plans to relocate them. Besides this, the corporation would offer compensation to each of the trees that has been axed and replace the same with three saplings, he said.
