Hyderabad: Scores of female candidates who applied Mehndi during Eid underwent tense moments during the B Ed web counseling and certificate verification on Sunday as the biometric device rejected their thumb impression.

For several candidates the anxiety levels escalated as only couple of days are left for completion of the entire process. While some tried to challenge the precision of the device itself, several other candidates too reported facing similar problem for the second consecutive day at one of the centres in city, Andhra Vidhyalaya (A V) College in Gagan Mahal near Himayathnagar.

Authorities organising the counseling struggled to find a way out to for this problem. They were surprised that the device did not recognise the thumb impression of candidates owing to a thick layer of ‘skin decoration with henna’ on their finger tips.

After realising their fault some of them tried to erase it with the help of detergent and some others even brought hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for getting rid of Mehndi from their palms. About 10 cases were identified on Sunday and another 20 cases on Saturday.

One of the frustrated candidates even brought a group of her friends and threatened to smash the biometric device at the centre on Sunday, leaving the authorities astonished.

“We clearly provided instructions during the time of application, but these girls might have failed to take it seriously. Those who have light colour are able to match by the machine, but the dark colours were not recognised. We have asked them not to panic as they have time till July 13. Their prospects will not get affected as we freeze all web options for allotments till that date,” said the centre’s coordinator V Vamshi.

Some others were cautious before appearing for counselling and blamed the candidates for their ignorant behaviour. The observers felt those with darkened finger tips were unable to match their earlier impression. “It is our mistake, we cannot blame them. I clearly told my wife to avoid applying henna on fingers,” said the spouse of a candidate.

State TS EdCET convenor Prof P Prasad spoke to the agency which provided the biometric machines and asked them for a way out. He also maintained that the candidates, who had appeared for ‘certificate verification’ would be provided some time. “We shall adopt the old method of identifying candidates with the help of documents and photographs as a relief measure,” he said.
