Hyderabad: People from different walks of life turned out in large numbers to make the mega plantation drive Harita Haram by the Telangana government a huge success. As many as 29.19 lakh saplings were planted on a single day at 3,985 locations across the city on Monday.

Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao kick-started the drive by planting saplings at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS). The chief minister said, “This two-week programme will be a performance indicator for employees, MPs, ministers and MLAs. Take this initiative seriously as we are obligated to give green and clean environment to our future generations.”

Governor E S L Narasimhan planted a sapling at a programme in BHEL attended by irrigation minister T Harish Rao. Information Technology minister K Taraka Rama Rao along with senior executives, software employees and senior government officials planted saplings at the IT Corridor in Gachibowli.

He started the plantation drive from TCS head office building in Hi-tec City where he said that the mega plantation was intended at increasing the green cover from mere 21 per cent to 33 per cent in the GHMC limits.

“It is our responsibility to participate in the green drive to plant help survive the saplings for our future of green pastures”, KTR pointed out.

Expressing concern at the dwindling green cover, he said loss of trees would lead to imbalance of ecology and have an adverse impact on our lives. “Let us not see the green drive as a government programme and instead everyone should think it as their own project and plant one sapling at least and protect them to offer Green Telangana for posterity,” he said.

Cutting across party lines, MPs, MLAs and public representatives participated in the massive plantation drive across the city. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority, Forest department, TSIIC and other government departments along with thousands of volunteers, celebrities, students from universities, colleges, schools, residential welfare associations and self help groups have enthusiastically participated in Harita Haram.
