Hyderabad: Campaigning for the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) workers’ union elections came to an end on Sunday evening with union leaders making a series of allegations against each other.

The 49,000-odd workers of the RTC would franchise their vote on July 19 to elect their representative in the Board of Directors. Seven unions are in the fray for the State-level recognition and nine unions for local recognition. However, the main fight is between Telangana Mazdoor Union (TMU) (affiliated to the ruling TRS party), Employees Union (EU) and National Mazdoor Union.

The campaign witnessed allegations, counter allegations, tall promises like the general elections by political parties. The TMU and EU, which as an alliance clinched the recognition in the undivided Andhra Pradesh Corporation, have been fighting separately this time. Both the unions claim that because of their efforts the employees could get better fitment in terms of salary and other benefits.

The instance of Rs 100-crore fraud allegations against TMU leader E Ashwadhama Reddy which had created a furore forcing the Chief Minister’s office to order an inquiry into it, was the main issue during the campaigning. The TMU leader however said that the allegations were
baseless.

The TMU leaders have been urging the staff to elect them for speedy redressal of grievances. They said that lobbying with government would solve their issues.

The EU has been banking on their earlier work to safeguard the interests of the workers. The EU leaders claimed that because of their efforts like fighting for 44 per cent fitment, better service conditions, phenomenal increase in arrears, re-implementation of mercy appointments, the workers got many benefits.

They claimed that 1,120 persons were given appointments under mercy plea and 24,577 contract workers were regularised. National Mazdoor Union (NMU), which enjoyed the patronage of workers for many years, is also in the contest claiming that it was the only union to safeguard the interests of the workers.

There were two groups of this union but a day before the notification, these two merged and influenced other union leaders like TMU to join NMU. There are 49,856 voters in the Corporation, who would cast their votes on July 19 and postal ballot will be on July 25. Results would be announced on August 6.
