Dry port dream a reality now
The long wait to have a dry port has finally come to an end. The land-locked Telangana would soon be connected directly with seaports in neighbouring states as the Union government gave its nod to set up a Multi Modal Logistic Park (MMLP), also called as dry port, at Eedula Nagulaplli in Medak, the native district of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
Hyderabad: The long wait to have a dry port has finally come to an end. The land-locked Telangana would soon be connected directly with seaports in neighbouring states as the Union government gave its nod to set up a Multi Modal Logistic Park (MMLP), also called as dry port, at Eedula Nagulaplli in Medak, the native district of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
The port is being constructed by the Container Corporation of India (Concor) under the centrally-sponsored ‘Sagaramala Project’, which aims to integrate development of ports, industrial clusters, hinterland and efficient evacuation systems through road, rail, inland and coastal waterways.
- Dry Port (also called inland port) is an inland inter-modal terminal which is directly connected by road or rail to a seaport and operates as a centre for the trans-shipment of sea cargo to inland destinations
- Nearly 170 dry ports are functional and another 70 are under implementation in the country
- 40 per cent of the dry ports are owned by CONCOR (Container Corporation of India Limited) and Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC)
The Concor had already taken up a 16-acre domestic container terminal at Nagulaplli. The new facility would house a multi-modal park coming up on nearly 80 acre which would be acquired by the Telangana State Industrial Development Corporation (TSIDC).
Telangana state representative in New Delhi N Venugopala Chary told The Hans India that that the logistic park would be directly connected to ports through a rail and road network, facilitating speedy transportation of industrial products.
“As Hyderabad has already emerged as a hub of pharma production, the park will help to increase exports and imports directly from ports across the country. The park will cater to both domestic and international needs,” he said.
Big warehousing facilities, godowns and containers would be established at the dry port area to stock industrial products, including food grains, granite, ceramics and electronic products.
A special office of Central Excise and Customs department would be opened at the MMLP for giving clearances to exports and imports. High-tech facilities like GPS system would also be installed to monitor the trade activities closely.
Officials said that the new facility would help to strengthen the trade network and boost the state’s economy in the coming years. The logistic park would also create huge employment potential and help in the establishment of ancillary units.
In fact, many senior leaders, including KCR’s daughter and Nizamabad MP K Kavitha, have tried hard to get a sanction for dry ports in their respective constituencies. Kavitha requested the Union government to set up the park in Armoor of Nizamabad district on the Hyderabad – Nagpur highway.
State Energy minister G Jagadish Reddy pitched for the port in his native Nalgonda district on Hyderabad – Vijayawada highway, while Panchayat Raj minister Jupally Krishna Rao urged the governments to set up the unit in Mahbubnagar district on Hyderabad – Bengaluru highway and transport minister P Mahendar Reddy was demanding that it be set up in Ranga Reddy district.
