Hyderabad: Civil society groups and intelligentsia on Tuesday strongly opposed the Mallannasagar project and demanded the government to either scrap the project or redesign the project as it was affecting thousands of people.

Speaking at a round table conference on the controversial Mallannasagar project, political scientist Prof G Haragopal on Tuesday said that the project was unscientific and had several flaws in the design. “Hence, the government should reconsider it and make suitable changes,” he said.

Haragopal demanded the state government to take up projects by keeping in mind larger public interest. “Mallannasagar reservoir’s height should be reduced, instead of the planned 560 feet,” he said and asked government to shed its adamant attitude on the project.

Telangana JAC chairman Prof M Kodandaram said that the government does not have clarity on provision of compensation. People have remained clueless about the amount they would get in return for their lands.
He wanted the project to be redesigned to bring down the cost.

“The oppression of people has been stopped. The government has forcibly taken away the land of thousands of farmers in the name of Land Acquisition Act, 2013,” he said.

Irrigation expert T Hanumantha Rao, who gave a technical presentation on Mallannasagar project, questioned the need for such a large project.

Later, representatives of the Mallannasagar Submerged Victims JAC released a fact-finding report on large-scale displacement of people because of the project.

Meanwhile, CPM state secretary Thammineni Veerabhadram lashed out at the TRS government for acquiring their lands illegally. He said CPM would stage a dharna at Indira Park on July 26 in support of the oustees. National CPM leader Brinda Karat would participate in the dharna.

He said the CPM has taken up padayatras against the Telangana government’s land acquisition and party leaders would visit areas that would be submerged because of Mallannasagar project.

“It was not proper for the government to state that it will give compensation to the oustees as per G.O.No.123 or as per Land Acquisition Act 2013,” he said and asked the chief minister to give clarity on the issue.
