Warangal: The online admissions system introduced by the State government this year in Telangana universities proved to be disastrous as many students could not follow it thoroughly.

Due to confusion and lack of knowledge about the online system, majority of the seats available under the jurisdiction of Kakatiya University and other universities have remained unfilled.

It might be noted that the online system is introduced following a decision by Telangana State Council of Higher Education. All the admissions for BA, B Com, B Sc and BBM degree courses in constituent, government, aided and private colleges in the State are made in online mode.

The decision to implement the new system was taken in May just few days ahead of the beginning of admissions process in the same month. The students were told to submit applications online by logging into the website, dost.cgg.gov.in, for which last date was June 6 and it was extended twice.

Neither university officials nor college managements organised any programme to educate students about the new system. As a result, many students made errors right from the stage of submitting applications and in exercising web options for course and college.

Officials maintained that 12 helpline centres in Warangal, Khammam and Adilabad district at different colleges have been setup to guide the students. But in reality, the applicants were not made aware helpline centres. There are 305 degree colleges under KU with availability of about 1.27 lakh seats.

But after closure of online registrations and allotment of seats in phase-I and phase-II, only 40 percent of the seats are filled up, as per the online admissions coordinator for Kakatiya University, YR Ramesh Kumar.

“I opted for a college in Duggondi in Warangal thinking it is located near the city. The college details provided are incomplete. I am forced to go for second round web options as I could not join that college,” said a student Annam Madhukar Reddy of Togarrai in Sultanabad mandal in Karimnagar.

The university authorities should have conducted programmes to create awareness among the students on the new admissions system to help students in getting admissions in a proper manner, Madhukar’s father A Raji Reddy said while speaking to The Hans India.

The admissions could increase by 10 per cent by the end of third phase, Ramesh Kumar hoped adding final phase registrations and web options were opened from July 25 to 30 for those who did not register in DOST so far.

Since the system is introduced recently, it is normal to have some hiccups. We had no to time conduct awareness programmes to educate the students. Next time the things could go on smoothly,” he added.
