State govt demands increase in Haj quota.

Hyderabad: Following reports that several States have failed to utilise the Haj quota provided to them, the State government urged the Centre to increase the Haj quota for the State in view of the huge demand here.

Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali wrote to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Saturday requesting her to allow more number of Haj pilgrims from the State to perform Haj this year.

While pointing out that the quota by some of the States was not fulfilled due to lack of demand, he urged the Union Minister to consider increasing the quota for the State.

“The quota which is not being utilised by the respective States may please be re-allocated to the State as there is acute demand for more slots,” he stated in the letter.

The Deputy Chief Minister also referred to reports that India has been allotted an additional quota of 20,000 as Iran will not be sending its pilgrims for Haj this year. He requested that Telangana be apportioned a major share of this increased quota.

In April, Mahmood Ali had called on the then Union Minister for Minority Affairs Najma Heptullah and sought an increase in the Haj quota for the State.

The deputy Chief Minister said as many as 44 lakh Muslims were living in Telangana and out of the 17,291 applications received, only 2,532 could be selected as per the Haj quota for the State.
