Hyderabad: Transport Minister P Mahender Reddy on Thursday said that he would soon submit a report to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on speeding up the process of setting up a road safety department in Telangana.

The Transport Minister, who chaired the third meeting of the Telangana State Road Safety Council (TSRSC) at Secretariat here on Thursday, expressed concern over the death of youth in large numbers in road accidents in the State. He directed officials to take effective measures to bring down accident deaths by at least 50 per cent before 2020 and become an inspiration to other States in the country.

The Minister said that the proposal of setting up a road safety department was under active consideration of the government and the Chief Minister had to be informed about the proposal. As part of this, the government proposes to provide special patrolling vehicles to 50 police stations along the National Highways apart from providing special trauma care ambulances on the lines of 108. He said that GPS technology would be fixed in these trauma care ambulances.

The Minister said that 77 per cent of the deaths on National and State Highways were because of rash, negligent and high speed driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.

He said that the TSRSC opined that there was a need to amend the Act to have wine shops 100 metres away from State and National Highways. The Minister asked officials to take strict action against belt shops near the highways.

The officials informed that the State government had requested the Centre for providing funds to take up road repair works at places where there were frequent accidents and that the Centre had agreed to provide an assistance of Rs 900 crore.

They further informed that funds would be utilised to cover all black spots where accidents have been reported frequently.The Minister said that Chief Minister KCR would soon release Rs 5 crore to the Road Safety Council fund.
