Sangareddy: With rains playing truant for the past few weeks, many farmers in Medak district are contemplating to go in for alternative crops in areas where rains could be deficient in the coming months. According to Agriculture department, there has been a visible change in the farmers’ crop preferences this Kharif season as compared to last year.

Cotton cultivation has come down from 1,34,239 hectares in Kharif 2015 to 84,175 hectares this year. “Much of the change can be attributed to the State government’s advice to farmers informing them not to go for cotton cultivation and to some extent due to awareness among farmers about the ill-effects of cotton farming and its demand falling globally,” said Manikyam, a representative of Deccan Development Society.

Meanwhile, Sugarcane and paddy cultivation has also come down. Sugarcane that was cultivated in 17,776 hectares last year has now come down to 6,814 hectares this year. This is because of successive droughts affecting sugarcane cultivation, closure of sugar factories, low minimum support price and factories delaying payments to cane farmers in the district.

The paddy cultivation has also come down from 61,512 hectares to 34,292 (in transplanting to tillering stage) and 3,425 hectares (still in nursery stage) this year. It has to be remembered that by this time during last Kharif, paddy crop was in transplantation stage only in 7,520 hectares, which has gone up to 34,292 this year.
