Hyderabad: With Ganesh immersion fast-approaching, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) has sought the help of voluntary organisations (NGOs) in keeping the Hussain Sagar lake clean by going in for floating gardens.

Following the appeal, the Marri Lakshma Reddy Educational Institutions group has come forward to cooperate with the HMDA in setting up a floating garden. As part of the process, a 20x20-ft floating garden has been set up with some imported plants, which help in purifying water, near the Buddha Purnima project office. The plants will restrict formation of fungus and the fish and plants would ensure water remained pure, say the HMDA officials.

M Lakshma Reddy of the Group told The Hans India that the working of the garden would be studied for 10 days. He said that the setting up of a floating garden on an experimental basis would result in ridding the carbon dioxide and fungus from the Hussain Sagar waters.

Pointing out that the lake had already become dirty, Mallik, an associate professor, said following a few steps taken by the State government during the last few months, the lake water had become better to some extent, with pungent smell disappearing.
