MuCHHUMARRI LIFT IRRIGATION PROJECT

Hyderabad: State government has decided to approach KRMB (Krishna River Management Board) seeking installation of telemetry system at the Muchhumarri lift irrigation project in Kurnool district. The project has been taken up by the Andhra Pradesh government.

Reacting to a report- “ Muchhumarri project a big blow to Telangana,” published in The Hans India on Saturday, the irrigation officials admitted that the Palamuru – Ranga Reddy lift irrigation project would face water problems if the AP government would draw water indiscriminately from the Muchhumarri project for which the works are on a fast pace.

The Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Sridhar Rao Deshpande to the State Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao told The Hans India that though it was possible for the AP government to draw water when the water level reach 810 ft at Srisailam under the lift scheme, the neighbouring State was entitled to utilise only 512 tmcft of allocated water in Krishna. If the State exceeded in utilisation of water, Telangana State government would not remain silent.

To protect its interests, the irrigation officials said the KRMB would be requested to set up telemetry system at Muchhumarri project to measure water usage accurately. The TS government had already sent proposals for installation of telemetry system at the Pothireddypadu project.

The government would also mount pressure on the Krishna Board to establish a joint monitoring system to keep a watch on the utilisation of water by two States before installing the telemetry.

State Special Chief Secretary to Irrigation S K Joshi said the government was maintaining strategic silence due to some technical reasons as this lift irrigation scheme and Palamuru – Ranga Reddy lift irrigation project were sanctioned in the united Andhra Pradesh.

Engineer – in Chief (Irrigation) Muralidhar Rao maintained that all the required steps were being taken to ensure proper utilisation of water allocated to Telangana State from Krishna.

The irrigation officials are, however, still confused over taking firm stand on whether to lodge a complaint with Union Ministry of Water Resources against AP government on Macchumarri. It may be mentioned here that the AP government had already lodged a complaint against TS government on Palamuru project.
