Nalgonda: Tension prevailed at the district Collectorate when police resorted to a mild lathi charge to disburse the students who tried to lay seize to the Collectorate demanding a hike in mess charges of the hostel students.

Under the aegis of Students Federation of India (SFI), the students of different government-run-hostels participated in the protest demonstration in front of the district Collectorate and raised slogans demanding increase of mess charges.

The police closed the gates of the Collectorate and set up barricades in support to the gates. When the students forcibly tried to barge into the premises of the Collectorate by climbing on the gates, the police resorted to a mild lathi charge.

The police arrested a few SFI leaders and whisked them away from the place in a vehicle.

Speaking on the occasion, SFI state president Kota Ramesh said the hostel inmates were facing untold sufferings because of low mess charges and non-availability of quality food.

This in turn is affecting the students’ health and studies also. He wanted the government to increase the mess charges immediately in tune with prices of essential commodities in the market.
