Hyderabad: Minister for Irrigation and Marketing T Harish Rao on Wednesday inaugurated the two-day capacity building workshop on electronic- National Agriculture Market (e-NAM) towards integrating 44 Agricultural Market Committees (AMCs).

Speaking on the occasion of signing a Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Agriculture, Marketing with Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) towards conducting research studies and capacity building activities on Wednesday, Harish Rao described the initiative as first of its kind in the department of marketing towards providing best services to the farmers of the State directly sans the involvement of middlemen.

  • Marketing Minister promises increase of cold storages and ripening chambers

The Minister said State government was in the process of giving a facelift to the markets, besides increasing the number of facilities like ripening chambers and cold storage. “With quality certification, farmers can enjoy increased profits and these kinds of technologies are part of best practices being adopted as part of upgradation process,” he said.

Answering to the questions raised by ASCI Chairman K Padmanabhaiah, Harish said Telangana Assembly had already ratified the single licence and single levy mechanism. For facilitating online trading, he informed that the government has asked the NALSAR University to prepare guidelines. In case of reduced prices of tomatoes and onions, he said the government was extending help to farmers by directly buying their produce.

Citing recent instance of Alampur (Mahbubnagar) where department had intervened in a case of under-pricing, the Minister informed that the agriculture marketing department procured 250 quintals of onions at Rs 8 per kg. He also said the Central government’s NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation) would intervene in the case of ‘green gram’ on the similar lines, as State government has already begun to negotiate over the issue.

While expressing optimism that the State would get good produce in October, Harish said the department would help farmers getting benefitted through competitive pricing through online trading of e-NAM. As part of pilot project, Telangana has successfully traded 19,600 tonnes of produce by adopting this new technology, he added.

Padmanabhaiah explained that the e-NAM has 28 products on its list, which would be completely integrated to the supply chain management of the farming sector. He described this as an assured market, where farmers would get best prices as buyers would directly dealing with them. “This would encourage farmers to sell specific products rather generic products,” Padmanabhaiah added.
