Hyderabad: The State government is preparing a fresh proposal to get national project status for Kaleshwaram project. Top officials of the Irrigation Department said the proposal is under preparation and Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao might submit it to the Union Minister for Water Resources when he attends the meeting with AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to resolve the inter-State issues pertaining to irrigation projects.

KCR would explain how Telangana had overcome all the hurdles in the construction of Tummidihatti, Chanaka- Korata and Medigadda projects under Kaleswaram by signing an MoU with the Maharashtra government. He would also brief the Union Minister on the detailed project report that was being prepared and would request the Centre to accord national project status to the project. He would also submit a copy of it to the Central Water Commission (CWC).

The State government is serious to get national project status since it would help in reducing the financial burden on State exchequer. The government had already constituted Kaleswaram Irrigation Corporation to raise funds for the project being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 80,000 crore.

After undergoing more changes in its redesigning, the project seeks to create an irrigation potential of 18.2 lakh acres in Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, Nalgonda and Ranga Reddy districts. In addition, it would stabilise another 11.8 lakh acres of existing ayacut. Besides, it also contemplates meeting 30 tmc ft drinking water needs of Hyderabad, another 10 tmc ft to villages en route and 16 tmc ft for industrial needs.
