In Godavari basin alone, inflows ended above the FRL (Full Reservoir Level) in 10 projects, out of 29. The official reports said that water level in the Nallivagu and Ghanapur anicut  projects in Medak district, Koulasanala (Nizamabad), Sathanala,  Swana and Vattivagu, Nilwai and Railvagu (Adilabad ), Upper Manair (Karimangar) and Peddavaru in Khammam districts crossed the FRL.

Hyderabad: Though major reservoirs received poor inflows, the medium irrigation projects brought a big relief to Telangana State which was reeling under severe water crisis. All the 36 medium projects constructed on Krishna and Godavari basins have received copious inflows in recent heavy rains at all domestic catchment areas this monsoon season.

In Krishna basin, three projects out of eight were overflowing with flooded waters. Kotipally Vagu in Ranga Reddy district, Lanka Sagar and Bayyaram tank in Khammam were brimming with heavy inflows. At many places, gates have been lifted and water discharged to prevent untoward incidents like submergence of low lying areas.

The irrigation officials attributed strengthening of tanks and other water bodies surrounding the projects under Mission Kakatiya, effective maintenance and regular removal of silt in the projects for receiving heavy inflows.

Perhaps for the first time in the last one decade, all the medium projects have recorded heavy inflows,” officials said, adding that the water would help to meet irrigation needs in the Kharif season as the major irrigation projects were yet to receive good inflows from upper riparian States.

The total ayacut brought under the medium projects was 8.30 lakh acres. With heavy inflows, the target of 100 per cent farming activity would be achieved this year, the officials said. The irrigation engineers have been asked to visit the projects and preserve water to meet drinking water and irrigation needs.

State Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao instructed irrigation officials to hold a meeting with Agriculture Department and prepare an action plan to encourage the farmers to take up farming activity under the medium projects extensively.
