Nalgonda: Various crops in about 50,000 hectares in the district were damaged due to the week-long heavy rains, incurring a heavy loss of about Rs 100 crore, according to preliminary estimations.The district officials said crops in 37 mandals of the total 55 mandals in the district were inundated due to heavy rains and overflow of tanks.

The heavy rains and overflow of the tanks have inundated crops including paddy, cotton, chilly, red gram, maize etc. Horticultural crops in 200 hectares were also damaged.Cotton crop in 14,000 hectares and paddy in 9,000 hectares was cultivated. As per the primary reports, a total of 2,300 houses were partially damaged due to heavy rains in the district. In all, bunds of 36 tanks were breached due to heavy inflow, which resulted in inundation of crops in their areas.
Meanwhile, four persons died in rain-linked incidents.

The district authorities were yet to conduct field visit and prepare a final report on crops and property damage in the district. CPI (M) district secretary Julakanti Rangareddy demanded the government payment of compensation to those farmers, whose crops were damaged and also waiver off their crop loans.

On other hand, the R&B officials estimated that a loss of about Rs 40 crore was incurred as several roads were damaged in the district. Out of 3,463 kilometers of R and B roads in the district, a stretch of over 200 km was damaged. The officials submitted proposals to the State government seeking Rs 2.5 crores for temporary repairs to the damaged roads.
