Mahbubnagar: The district administration has brought back the smiles to the faces of depressed onion farmers by announcing a minimum support price of Rs 800 per quintal for the produce at their farms, on Friday. Elated farmers expressed their happiness over government's support.

A team of officials lead by Joint Collector Ram Kishan and RDO of Gadwal Abudul Hamid visited the onion farmers in Vaddepally and Alampur mandals in Gadwal and enquired about the procurement process. “This year, the onion farmers have suffered a huge loss.

Moreover, there is no proper support price available in the market. Keeping this in view, the government has decided to come to the rescue of these poor farmers and has decided to procure onions right at the fields of the farmer. We have already made a list of all onion farmers and have arranged the trucks and other transport facilities which will be borne by the government. The farmers need not pay any transport or labour charges," officials said.

They said the procurement process was being speeded up and the officials from marketing, horticulture and agriculture departments were directed to cooperate and coordinate in grading and assessing the produce and ensure that the procurement process was speeded up to benefit maximum number of onion farmers.

“We are happy that this time, the government has come to our rescue. This will not only boost our confidence but also encourage us to go for more horticulture crops,” said an onion farmer from Konkala village.
