Hyderabad: Have you been wondering why the water pressure has reduced drastically and why water supply in your area which was spot on all these days is intermittent.

The answer is the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSS&B) has decided to go all out to appease the slum dwellers at the cost of other residents.

The intention of the board to provide water to 167 slums though noble has caught people in residential colonies off-guard.

In a bid to appease the people in slums, other residential colonies are not being supplied water on a daily basis. For instance, drinking water to Gandhi Nagar, Ramanthapur, Bholakpur and other areas was not supplied on Tuesday in order to facilitate supply to these 167 slums.

Besides, the official said that the water board has even reduced the pressure in several areas. He said that the water board cannot supply drinking water to city residents on regular basis until June.

However, he also said that the daily water supply may be restored after monsoon. Residents have been complaining about reduced pressure already.

N V KK Lakshmi, a resident of Central Excise Colony said that she noticed that the water pressure was low in the last few days which was never the case in the past.

The official also made clear that the HMWS&SB would supply drinking water on daily basis to 167 slums but not to other areas of the city.

According to an official, the water board to impress the political bosses announced the daily water supply without the checking the ground reality. The official opined that there is no way water can be provided daily without first curbing Non Revenue Water (NRW) which has been estimated about 70 per cent in the Old City.

After the announcement of supplying water on a daily basis, the board now postponed it by a week and say that it is being run on a trial basis. A senior engineer on condition of anonymity said, “Repairing the damaged water supply lines and laying new pipelines is essential. Until these two are in place the board cannot supply water daily.”

Currently, there are 8.79 lakh domestic consumers with the HMWSS&SB, of which only 1.61 lakh have working meters. The remaining consumers either have meters fixed but are defunct or do not have meters at all. He said out of 355 million gallons per day (MGD), about 30 per cent of is not billed or comes under NRW.
