Hyderabad: All India Majilis-e-ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Charminar MLA Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri on Saturday countered the claims made by the government on welfare measures and developmental activities presented in the Governor’s address in the joint session of the Legislature.

Speaking on the motion of thanks to the Governor’s address, the MIM MLA said the people of Hyderabad had voted for the TRS in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections as it had promised double bedroom houses, better infrastructure and civic amenities.

There was, however, no progress in this direction. No housing units had been allocated to the Muslims in the city and the functioning of GHMC remained mired in corruption.

The people continued to suffer due to bad roads, lack of drainage network and drinking water in several parts, such as Charminar, Rajendranagar and Malakpet, etc, he said.

Referring to the conditions in Osmania and Niloufer Hospitals, Quadri said the two hospitals continued to be in bad shape. He said, “lower-rung staff at these hospitals were demanding Rs 1,000 bribes in the case of male child and Rs 500 in the case of female child to hand them over to their mothers.

This, being the situation, how can the government claim that it was a corruption-free government, he asked.

Citing the poor conditions in the hospitals in the old city, the MIM MLA demanded that the government immediately ensure that repair works are carried out for them.

He also demanded that the government take up renovation and repair works at Charminar and Mecca Masjid. He said the Charminar Pedestrian Project (CPP) was progressing at snail’s pace, he said.

Pasha Quadri said even the drinking water supply was erratic and the old city areas were facing frequent power outage. This was causing problems for students appearing for examinations.

That apart, delays and shortcoming in disbursal of Aaasra pensions, non-receipt of CM’s overseas education scholarships to the students, who went abroad for higher studies, distribution of essential commodities though PDS outlets, were other problems that were being faced by the people in the Old City and demanded that the government pay immediate attention and rectify the same.

He further alleged that the traffic police and GHMC Town Planning wing were collecting bribes and encouraging encroachement of road margins to set up shops. The police are also filing cases against roadside hawkers and pushcart vendors in addition to imposing penalty of Rs 3,000 in some cases, he said.

Responding to the MIM member, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao said the power outage was not on account of shortage of power, but due to some local technical problems. He said as regards the alleged harassment of hawkers was concerned, he would ask the Home Minister to look into the matter and take necessary steps.
