Hyderabad: Hussain Sagar nala near Marriott Hotel and Lower Tank Bund is spreading a pervasive stink due to effluents leaking from the broken pipelines. But the officials of HMWS&SB and PCB are turning a blind eye to the problem.

Effluents from Jeedimetla Industrial park, while being carried towards Amberpet chemical treatment plant through pipelines escape through various points of leakage along broken pipelines. Coming in contact with the Hussain Sagar nala, these effluents have started causing a pervasive stink around the areas between Marriot Hotel and Gowshala near Lower Tank Bund.

For the public it is just a bad smell that spoils their day as they are unaware of the health hazards involved. Pallav Raj (34), a local resident, living next to Bhagya Nagar Goseva Sadan near Lower Tank Bund shared his experience saying “It has been stinking like this for quite a while now, but mostly during the afternoons.

Nobody has ever cared about it.” As the place is surrounded by various Goushalas, there is a constant fear of the cattle being affected by it. Mallesh Yadav (48), who takes care of the cattle in the five storied Goushala near Lower Tank Bund, said “The smell creates constant fear.

The surroundings affect the quality of life of our cows. We make sure our cows get healthy water to drink but the water we use to wash them might get contaminated and this scares us”.

Project officials from HMWS & SB for pipelines carrying effluents have stated that it is the responsibility of the maintenance wing to take an action. Maintenance officials from the board are clueless about such an issue and could not comment upon the actions they take.

The contamination can cause issues ranging from skin irritations to damaging lungs, eyes, etc. permanently. Health expert Dr Subba Rao, while talking about the issue, said it can pose a threat to the domestic animals around the area. “Aquatic life is definitely under the threat and even the cattle breeding may face a serious health hazard.”
