Hyderabad: Online land registration has been put on hold in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation limits following the big land scam unearthed by state Registration and Stamps department in the city.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting with top officials conducted by Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Revenue Mohd Mahmood Ali. The officials found the accused in the scam had exploited the loopholes in the online registration system. Under the system, the applicant can register land purchased by him in any sub registrar office.

The online registration systems have been launched in 2015 to bring in transparency in the land transaction and encourage good governance at village level.

Officials said that of the 796 acres of land, 547 acres is government land and the remaining belongs to private persons under the jurisdiction of Moosapet Sub Registrar. The encroachers filed application online using the e-registration facility in Kukatpally Sub Registrar office.

The accused colluded with the arrested sub registrar and got the lands registered in their names. As per the guidelines, the official should give his nod for land registration only after seeking the permission of his counterpart under whom the land jurisdiction falls. In this case, the arrested official R Srinivas overlooked the procedure.

Top official of the state Stamps and Registration department told The Hans India that the government has stopped online registrations immediately in the areas where land prices were high in Hyderabad until further orders are issued.

The Revenue Minister told newsmen that the department has been asked to study the loopholes in the existing e-registration system and recommend whether to continue the online system in the future in the wake of increasing multiple registration of lands and encroachment of government lands.

Stating that title deeds of the encroached lands would be cancelled and stringent action would be taken against the culprits, Mahmood Ali said a thorough probe has also been ordered into the pending land scams in Kukatpally, Balanagar and LB Nagar where the government and private lands were registered in multiple title deeds. He also said Aadhaar would be made mandatory for the registration of lands in the state.
